RISE and Apple develop a new bio-based packaging material

In a joint research project, RISE and Apple are developing a unique bio-based foam.

The foam’s properties indicate strong potential to replace fossil-based materials such as polymer foams, which are widely used in packaging, insulation, and lightweight composite applications. The results of this development are presented in a white paper released by RISE and Apple.

"The development of new bio-based materials is a key component of the transition to a less fossil-dependent society. RISE is committed to driving sustainable transformation and innovation in close partnership with industry, and our collaboration with Apple on bio-based foam is an excellent example of this in practice," says Henrik Bagewitz, Vice President of Business Development at RISE.

The new material, a cellulose-based foam, has demonstrated strong performance characteristics, including excellent compression resistance and a uniform, fine pore structure that gives it an attractive appearance. A key advantage is that it can be recycled within existing paper and packaging recycling streams, while its manufacturing process is relatively simple compared with many alternative materials. The foam has broad application potential, ranging from packaging solutions to construction materials and other lightweight structural applications.
